API World 2018

APIs are one of the primary enablers of a massive transformation in business models. Today's most popular consumer services (e.g., e-commerce, ridesharing, streaming media) would not be possible without APIs. Businesses also rely on APIs for critical capabilities (e.g., communications, payments, logistics) and interfacing with governments (e.g., tax authorities). Almost every company is becoming a technology company, and tomorrow's software developer will not write a single line of code without checking first to see whether they can access the capability they need through an API. Technology companies will unbundle software into discrete services (e.g., stripe payments, Twilio messaging, yaas.io commerce) and companies in other industries will race to make their products configurable (e.g., appliances, vehicles) and capabilities consumable (e.g., production, transportation) via API. Anything that can be exchanged via API will be, and APIs will become the highest volume channel for delivering many of the world's most consumed services (+$200B of purchases will be made via API by 2020). The impact on the economy will be massive (+$5T of economic activity will be API enabled by 2020).
