The United States Digital Service is a team at The White House, using design and technology to deliver better services to the American people. For the past year, the USDS has been embedded at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) helping build a new API that helps the millions of Americans on Medicare share their data. With the CMS Blue Button API, third party Developers can build integrations to access claims information for a Medicare beneficiary. The Blue Button API contains four years of claims data for 53 million Medicare beneficiaries, and provides access to Medicare Part A, B and D data. This data reveals a variety of information about a beneficiary’s health, including type of Medicare coverage, drug prescriptions, primary care treatment and cost. Beneficiaries also have full control over how their data can be used and by whom, with identity and authorization controlled by MyMedicare.gov.
