PRO: Business of APIs: API Strategy [clear filter]

CANCELLED: APIs as Products | How Good Are My APIs?
Around four years ago, we began the journey at PayPal to transform all of PayPal’s core capabilities into a platform of discoverable, well-encapsulated, reusable API-driven products. We have used a customer-oriented approach to go from a very monolithic and siloed architecture to a much more loosely coupled set of over 150 services with well designed, modern APIs. We framed this transformational exercise as an organizational change initiative, with the goal of bringing a fundamental shift in how we design and build APIs. We made it a priority to identify and serve all key “customer” constituencies – developers who design and build APIs, developers who create innovative applications using these APIs, as well as the executives who support these efforts. This mindset influenced the strategy, the processes and the tools that we put together, our communication with the stakeholders, and the definition and measurement of success. An unflinching focus on developer experience and satisfaction has been key to our success, and it continues to shape how we manage this transformational program today. While every company has its own unique culture and challenges, many of the very valuable and insightful lessons that we have learned, and the approaches that we have utilized, are applicable to other companies that are trying to chart the same course.

PRO TALK: API Security: When OAuth Is Not Enough
Given the popularity of APIs and microservice based application development, it is no surprise that API security is also a topic of great interest. OAuth is the most common API security standard in use, but it is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. This session will illustrate where OAuth limitations can be addressed by adding in the complementary functionality of the attribute-based access control (ABAC) standard. ABAC, OAuth and OpenID Connect standards can work together in meeting the broadest range of security requirements when sensitive or regulated data is accessed via APIs, providing a more comprehensive security formula than when using OAuth alone. Jonas and Gerry will explore the details of how these standards integrate, describe benefits of the approach, and will provide a live demonstration.

Their strategy is to bring this new tech to the organization. But that strategy doesn’t work. Come to this session to learn why not and what you should be considering to build a successful API Program for your company.

PRO TALK: Ten Steps to Build a Strong Token Based API Security
Many developers are well versed with domain based application development. However when it comes to security, there are very few who can ascertain to the credibility of their API and Identity assertion systems. This talk targets the uncertainty around the functioning and utility of tokens in an API security landscape. It addresses the basic needs of a token infrastructure and what would it take to build one. This talk aims to help developers embrace security and identity as part of their tool chain and remove the skepticism around building their own API security. The developers should be able to use this discussion as a launchpad for building their own API authentication systems. This is a unique talk as many companies closely guard the secret of how their token infrastructure functions.,Being the lead architect for eBay Identity and having hand crafted the infrastructure which powers eBay's entire API stack authentication, Senthilkumar is driving the vision for Identity architecture for the next generation of services and uniquely poised to help developers with the talk to understand the nuances of API security and token infrastructure. He will be providing references to OAuth RFC specifications, OWASP threats and how it is addressed etc.

PRO TALK: Business of APIs: API Monetization
APIs are one of the primary enablers of a massive transformation in business models. Today's most popular consumer services (e.g., e-commerce, ridesharing, streaming media) would not be possible without APIs. Businesses also rely on APIs for critical capabilities (e.g., communications, payments, logistics) and interfacing with governments (e.g., tax authorities). Almost every company is becoming a technology company, and tomorrow's software developer will not write a single line of code without checking first to see whether they can access the capability they need through an API. Technology companies will unbundle software into discrete services (e.g., stripe payments, Twilio messaging, yaas.io commerce) and companies in other industries will race to make their products configurable (e.g., appliances, vehicles) and capabilities consumable (e.g., production, transportation) via API. Anything that can be exchanged via API will be, and APIs will become the highest volume channel for delivering many of the world's most consumed services (+$200B of purchases will be made via API by 2020). The impact on the economy will be massive (+$5T of economic activity will be API enabled by 2020). This session will provide business and technology leaders with best practices and leading examples, so they can define a winning API monetization strategy and take advantage of this opportunity.
